He illustrated more than 130 books and created art for stamps, murals, and sculptures around the world. He is survived by his wife Muriel, also an artist, their daughter Sophie and grandson Alexei. Jan Pienkowski, a Polish-born illustrator of children’s books who captured the imagination with his evocative silhouettes of witches and princesses and was hailed as the “most popular” children’s book illustrator in Britain, has died. Pienkowski, who had cancer, died at a hospice in Hampshire on Saturday, his family said. He was 68.
